Three reasons for choosing custom software development over an off-the-shelf solution
If you are building a business based on a technology, you might be tempted by the plethora of off-the-shelf options that seemingly will fit your objectives for a fraction of the cost of a custom solution. Often these solutions are indeed the right fit for your project. However there are several reasons why you should consider customized software instead.
- If you can buy it, so can your competition. Using an off-the-shelf package is a quick way to erode your value proposition. No one likes me-too products and if your value proposition is built on technology make sure you protect that technological advantage like you would protect a trade secret.
- Pre-built software is expensive to customize. If you are planning to customize an off-the-shelf solution, you should think about how your customizations fit into the software manufacturers upgrade path. Often times, customizing means that you can’t take advantage of scheduled upgrades without the added cost of re-customizing. If you are going to customize more often than not, you’ll end up paying just as much as with a custom solution but you’ll lose the flexibility that a custom solution gives you.
- Pre-built software often comes with unneeded overhead. Flexibility is the key to how quickly a business can adapt to rapidly emerging opportunity. Sure all those extra features seem like they are great to have if you ever need them, but when they slow down your ability to react as a business, it’s not so good.
